Drug Side Effects and Seizures
Sadly, some medications can provoke seizures, especially in patients with a history of seizures.
The following medications will not cause epilepsy, but they can cause seizures in people who have had past seizures:
- Some antihistamines
- Attention-deficit drugs
- A number of psychiatric medications
- The weight loss drug Dexatrim (phenylpropanolamine)
- Certain antibiotics
- Recreational drugs like amphetamines and cocaine
- Some respiratory drugs
- The multiple sclerosis drub Liorisal (baclofen)

Dilantin and SJS
Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a potentially fatal medical condition that affects your skin and mucous membranes by causing a rash and blisters throughout your body. Dilantin (phenytoin) is a widely-prescribed antiepileptic drug prescribed to prevent tonic-clonic (grand mal) and complex partial (psychomotor) seizures.
Some experts believe that a reaction to Dilantin can lead to the development of SJS. Although Dilantin has been recalled multiple times since it was introduced into the marketplace, it is still being widely prescribed.
Other anti-seizure medications known to potentially cause SJS include:
- Tegretol (carbamazepine)
- Lamictal (lamotrigine)
- Levaquin (levofloxacin)
