Increased Incidents of Driving and Texting Accidents

With just about everyone owning a cell phone and a car, the incidents of texting and driving are certainly going to increase—that is no surprise. But what is surprising is that adults as well as teens are texting chronically while driving even though many states now have laws to punish cell phone users who text while driving. Many states, including Texas, punish drivers who use their cell phones with hefty fines, especially if the driver is a repeat offender.

According to statistics in 2005, 10 billion texts were sent in December, and in 2008 the number increased to 110,000 billion texts sent in the same month. With that number expected to continue to grow, it is no wonder that the number of car accidents due to texting is growing.

According to a report by the National Safety Council, 28% of car accidents are caused by talking or texting while driving. In another recent survey, 26% of mobile phone users said that they have texted while driving. Sixty percent of teenagers, typically the most dangerous of drivers, reported that they have texted while driving.

If you have been the victim of someone else’s negligence and have been in a car accident due to a texting driver, please contact Dallas car accident attorney John Polewski at Polewski & Associates today to schedule a confidential consultation.

I've been hearing far too many stories lately about terrible accidents due to texting and driving. I suspect all of these new laws that are popping up plus public pressure will stop a lot of people from texting but it is all too easy for some people to pick up their phone and text even though they know better. Perhaps we need to pressure the people creating and providing texting devices to somehow get their devices to stop or dissuade people from texting in a moving vehicle. There are just too many distractions while driving these days and people need to learn or be forced to focus on their driving!
